15 ingredients to keep in your cupboard for those times when you just can't decide what to cook

Some ingredients from ethnic groceries- spot the tahini and date syrup from the list!
  1. Baking powder: because you never know when you may want to bake a cake...
  2. Bicarbonate of soda: good with lemon juice instead of baking powder on ekadasi days
  3. Tahini: very versatile; use in sweet or savoury sauces, icings, dips etc.
  4. Smoked paprika: great for when you want to liven something up with a different taste
  5. Miso: a good source of savoury gravy when you haven't time to make stock
  6. Dried fruits: use soaked or unsoaked in baking, salads etc.
  7. Smooth peanut butter: can be the basis of a savoury sauce, cookies or sweets
  8. Plain Almonds or cashews: use toasted, soaked or raw, ground, chopped or whole...
  9. Desiccated coconut: naturally sweet for baking, but also good in curries etc.
  10. Plain wholemeal flour: for baking, breads, pastry, batter- lots of stuff
  11. Agave or date syrup: just in case you want to make another batch of flapjacks...
  12. Gram (chickpea/ garbanzo) flour: good in pakora batter and to enrich vegeburgers/ loaves
  13. Dried  beans:   red kidney, butter beans, kala channa (dark chickpeas)
  14. Yeast extract: good to flavour pasty or pie fillings and as the basis of gravy
  15. Soy sauce: for stir-fry sauces or satay

There are more, like bottled lemon juice, a good stock of whole and powdered dried herbs and spices, Rogan Josh masala spice mix... what do you always keep in stock?

    A New Year's Resolution...!

    Looking back at my recent postings, I think it's high time I wrote about something other than baking... so not only will I be concentrating on eating more of the good things and less of the "treats" in my own diet, but I should also hopefully be posting more healthy recipes!
